The Story of Stratford

Launched in summer 2019, Stratford is a Vancouver-based managing general underwriting agency that offers competitive optional auto insurance policies in the province, helping the vast majority of British Columbians save money. Our name is new, but Stratford’s leadership team draws on a decades-long track record on the west coast. Led by veteran insurance professional Colin Brown, we created Stratford after hearing that consumers wanted a better insurance experience that includes affordability, coverage and service.

Colin Brown, CEO

Colin Brown is a Chartered Insurance Professional and Chartered Arbitrator with over 40 years of experience in the British Columbia insurance sector.

In 1974, Colin was part of a small team that helped establish the operational framework for the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. He then went on to hold a number of senior claims and underwriting management positions with ICBC, including the position of Chief Underwriter from 1988 to 1995.

In 1995, Colin joined Canadian Direct Insurance’s executive team, and remained with the company as Chief Operating Officer until the company’s sale in 2015. Under his leadership, Canadian Direct was awarded the J.D. Power and Associates Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Award in 2011-2013, and Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures Award.

Colin holds a B.Sc. degree from the Queens University of Belfast and a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Simon Fraser University.

Director of Underwriting

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the President and CEO, this position will be responsible for design, implementation and review of the underwriting criteria supporting the delivery of competitive insurance products. This position will assist in developing and implementing the strategic business plan in order to generate profitable growth and increase market share. This position will also be responsible for establishing good corporate governance, while building organizational capability in managing risk on a comprehensive basis.

  • Effectively lead and implement underwriting, pricing and risk management strategies to achieve profitable growth objectives;
  • Effectively manage and develop the broker distribution network;
  • Experience in developing and using policy wordings and compiling actuarial data;
  • Accountable for financial results including sales growth, loss ratio and underwriting profit;
  • Lead the evaluation of market conditions, diversification and oversee evaluation criteria and management initiatives to ensure profitable growth;
  • Oversee the development and deployment of enterprise and operational Risk Management programs including the framework, tools and practices used to effectively analyze, report and manage risk;
  • Ensure policies and procedures are in compliance with applicable regulations and corporate governance standards;
  • Promote an effective team culture built upon Stratford’s values, mission and purpose.
  • Work closely with team members providing support and mentorship with a focus on developing future leaders and striving to improve individual and team performance.
  • Have a strong understanding of insurance technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • 10+ years of relevant insurance underwriting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role;
  • University degree in a related field. Insurance and/or risk management accreditation (FCIP, CIP, CAIB, CRM or ARM) is desired. General Insurance Level 3 Licence would be an asset;
  • Strong track record of successfully managing profit and loss in personal or commercial lines insurance;
  • Extensive knowledge of the regulations needed to make decisions regarding key issues and identify opportunities.

Business Development Coordinator

Stratford Underwriting Agency currently has a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Business Development Coordinator. Reporting to the Business Development Manager, the successful candidate will contribute to the achievement of a profitable and growing portfolio of private automobile excess coverage by effectively promoting the Company.

Role and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Business Development Manager, this position will effectively support Stratford’s broker marketing plan to generate profitable growth. As Stratford’s subject matter expert, responding to broker partners through prompt and professional service and efficient delivery of competitive products is priority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effectively implement the corporate marketing strategy, and develop and grow broker partner relationships to achieve profitable growth objectives;
  • Develop and nurture a strong sales culture with broker partners to support the achievement of the profitability and sales growth, through broker visits and webinars in alignment with corporate marketing strategy;
  • Subject matter expert, supporting broker sales through telephone and online support;
  • Coordination of Broker partner agents training and development;
  • Gather market and competitive information for product and pricing reviews by business development and analysts;
  • Work closely with the underwriting team members to develop brokers, including product and system training, sales and product promotion;
  • Coordinate Broker partners incentive contests, promotional items, monthly broker production reports and organization/planning of Broker events.

Key Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant insurance experience, including sales;
  • Familiarity of underwriting, including automobile is desired;
  • Ability to work independently and highly self motivated;
  • Insurance and/or risk management accreditation (FCIP, CIP, CAIB, CRM or ARM) is desired;
  • General Insurance Licence Level 1 is required. (Level 2 would be an asset)

Business Intelligence Analyst

Role and responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst this position will administer and maintain information management systems, maintaining data to enable the generation of reports, and using a data-driven approach, explain the drivers of performance recommend plan features, pricing, and customer experience opportunities. In addition, this position will assist in Stratford’s operating system coordinating with department leads and vendor in the operation of the system.

  • Ensure the integrity of the information maintained, data supporting, and output created from the databases used to support the claims, pricing, and underwriting;
  • Develop, analyze and maintain management and operation spreadsheets, databases, and reports produced for business development, underwriting, claims, pricing and executive teams;
  • Assist in recommendations and executions on an information management metrics and infrastructure;
  • Assist in developing and/or maintaining pricing and predictive analytic model reports, analyze claims and pricing data, and communicates results to management;
  • Liaise and collaborate with internal and external stakeholder including Underwriters, System Vendors, Executive, on requests for ad hoc reporting and data requests;
  • Helps support Stratford’s Operating System environment, including with serving as a resource to mentor team members, troubleshooting problems, document management, and access to information for the business development, underwriting, pricing and claims units.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 1 – 3 years of relevant work experience;
  • University degree in a related field (Business, information systems, strategic analysis, actuarial) is preferred;
  • Advanced MS Office skills including SQL, Access, and VBA for building analytical models.

  • Demonstrate and foster a drive-for-results mentality, strong commitment, and accountability while making sound decisions and achieving goals;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify relationships and issues;
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments in a timely manner;

  • Experience in an insurance or claims environment or the completion of an insurance program with a focus on claims or underwriting is an asset;
